From Ruins to Runway: Announcing Our Special September Series on Post-War Italian Fashion and Cinema

Before Milan became the undisputed global capital of luxury, a post-war nation achieved one of the most extraordinary cultural and economic turnarounds of the 20th century. In the shadow of World War II, Italian tailors, aristocrats, and filmmakers transformed regional workshops into international powerhouses of style, challenging Paris and capturing the imagination of Hollywood.

Starting Monday, September 7, 2026—timed alongside Milan Fashion Week—Expert Italian is launching an exclusive 4-part bi-weekly series: From Ruins to Runway: Post-War Fashion & Antonioni’s Le Amiche.

Using Michelangelo Antonioni’s groundbreaking 1955 film Le Amiche (The Girlfriends) as our focal lens, we examine how 1950s cinema, Alta Moda salons, and visionary artisans rebuilt Italy’s national identity through elegance and design.
